Kickoff Match
Eight-Man Tag Team Match
The Hype Bros & American Alpha vs. The Ascension & The Vaudevillains

RESULT: The Hype Bros & American Alpha win via pinfall; Jason Jordan pinned Aiden English following Grand Amplitude.

TIME: 9:14

THOUGHTS: An energetic, fun kickoff to No Mercy, albeit with the typical "multi-finisher melee" ending to the match. Decision wasn't much in doubt, as with the Usos homing in on the Smackdown tag straps, they'll have a ready-made feud with American Alpha given their recent rivalry, and you need to keep Jordan & Gable looking good going into it.

(MAIN EVENT)
WWE World Championship
Triple Threat Match
AJ Styles (c) vs. John Cena vs. Dean Ambrose

RESULT: AJ Styles wins via pinfall; Styles pinned Cena after two chair shots to the gut and back.

TIME: 21:15

THOUGHTS: I question the logic of putting the main event on first to keep ratings up while against the presidential debate for two reasons: 1. The PPV's on an entirely separate network from said debate anyway, and 2. Why would WWE worry about its primary demographic, i.e. kids, changing the channel to a political debate of all things? Makes me wonder how paranoid WWE is while trying to maintain that they're "mainstream." If you're truly mainstream, you should be confident enough in your  program that your audience won't feel the need to switch channels.

That aside, it was as action-packed and hectic as could be expected, having a better balance of two-man and three-man spots than WWE's triple threat formula usually dictates. The false finish with the double submission was unique and rarely seen, and the true finish with the chair works as well, since we know AJ is as pragmatic a wrestler as they come and will take any opportunity that comes his way to win a match, especially in a No-DQ environment.

I can't help but wonder what Cena taking the fall means here; he's been pinned 3 different times by Styles in this year alone, which makes me think there may be a scenario similar to Miz-Ziggler, where Cena gambles on his career to bring home a record 16th world championship to tie Flair.

Women's Singles Match
Nikki Bella vs. Carmella

RESULT: Nikki Bella wins via pinfall; Nikki pinned Carmella following the Rack Attack 2.0.

TIME: 8:06

THOUGHTS: An aggressive spitfire of a match, as you should expect when you've built up a personal grudge like what we had between Nikki and Carmella. Decent back and forth between the two, with Nikki finally coming out on top after losing out week after week to Carmella. A necessary win for Nikki, but I imagine the feud will continue, likely with a title contendership thrown into the mix to spice things up.

Smackdown Tag Team Champioship
Heath Slater & Rhyno (c) vs. The Usos

RESULT: Heath & Rhyno win via pinfall; Rhyno pinned Jey Uso following the GORE! GORE! GORE!

TIME: 10:17

THOUGHTS: For the record, I'm not a huge fan of "Beauty and the Man-Beast" as the champs' official tag team moniker. I would've gone with the "Two-Man World GORE!"

Anyway, I appreciated the change in the usual dynamic from Slater & Rhyno, with Rhyno playing the "face in peril", playing up that maybe the Usos would take the tag straps here by preying on an isolated Slater. That ended up not being the case, with Rhyno standing tall for his team once again. So, it appears that we're going for more a slow burn, both to the Usos' eventual title reign and their subsequent feud with American Alpha, and Rhyno's eventual turn on Slater over Heath being the weak link.

Singles Match
Jack Swagger vs. Baron Corbin

RESULT: Baron Corbin wins via pinfall; Corbin pinned Swagger after an eye poke & End of Days.

TIME: 7:30

THOUGHTS: Your typical "big hoss" match with a bit of rudo savvy by Corbin, going after the hand of Swagger to stop his initial attempts at the Patriot Lock. When that failed, there was always the good old eye poke, meaning that the eventual rubber match will most likely see some kind of "No Holds Barred"-type stipulation given the nature of the two "victories."

Zack - 3/8
Nick - 4/8
Greg - 3/8

Intercontinental Championship
Career vs. Title Match
The Miz (c) w/Maryse vs. Dolph Ziggler
(If Ziggler loses, he must retire)

RESULT: NEWWWWW Champion Dolph Ziggler wins via pinfall; Ziggler pinned Miz following a superkick.

TIME: 19:45

THOUGHTS: When you get a huge amount of emotional and mental build-up to the match, you need that same kind of intensity to pull off a truly great match, and that's just what Ziggler and Miz did here.

From the start, with Ziggler attempting desperation pins after every maneuver, to the end, with Miz utilizing every tactic he's previously used (Maryse, Spirit Squad, illegal spray) to get the upper hand only to fall to Ziggler's persistence, these two men put together a fantastic match both physically and psychologically, having the crowd in their hands every moment.

The big question here is: Now what? Obviously, the rematch for Miz is due, but now we're on the emotional downward slope from tonight, and even with another match aspect that could be as interesting as "career vs. title", I'm not sure Miz and Ziggler could repeat what they pulled off here.

If Ziggler winning was always the intended finish (despite all the social media and "spoilers" indicating otherwise), then I'm frankly surprised this didn't go on last, so as to have a feel-good moment for Ziggler and to send the crowd home happy. That leaves Wyatt-Orton in the pseudo-main event position, and that doesn't leave me very idealistic as to how good a note No Mercy will end on, based solely on the build-up (or lack thereof) on Wyatt's end.

Nick - 4/8

Becky Lynch vs. Alexa Bliss
(CANCELLED)

Women's Singles Match
Alexa Bliss vs. Naomi

RESULT: Naomi wins via pinfall; Naomi pinned Alexa after countering the Cross Arm Breaker into a roll-up.

TIME: 5:26

THOUGHTS: This was a very sloppy effort from these two, no real fire or energy, and a finish that seemed more anticlimactic than shocking. It doesn't do any favors for Alexa Bliss' credibility, as she needed this win to remain strong and a viable initial threat to Becky's championship. Now, it seems rather muddled with Naomi thrown into the mix.

I can understand wanting to spice up the championship picture, but I would've waited and given Becky time to establish some one-on-one championship cred before jumping into Triple Threats and other multi-women scenarios, as we've already had a number of those in the last couple months.

(No WK King of PPV update; match was cancelled/changed last minute and predictions could not be made in time)

Singles Match
Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

RESULT: Bray Wyatt wins via pinfall; Wyatt pinned Orton following Sister Abigial.

TIME: 15:41

THOUGHTS: This would've made for a great TV main event, to be honest. As a PPV main event? Very middle of the road. Again, I would've put Miz-Ziggler in the main event spot here, as that match had much more riding on it, what with Ziggler's career versus Miz's title in front of what would've been a red-hot West Coast crowd.

That being said, Wyatt's looked very lost in this feud and really needed the win here to retain any sort of relevancy/status in the ring or among the WWE fans. Harper returning (as I pointed out on the Pay-Per-PreView) was the right call here; with Rowan on the DL, Harper can slide seamlessly into the Orton-Wyatt feud as Bray's go-to heavy. He can also be expected to pull off more athletic, heated matches with Orton than Rowan could, based on what we've seen in Harper's past affairs with Bryan, the Usos, Ambrose and Ziggler.

Stay Kennected, everybody!!!
