Welcome to The Wrestling Kennection's LIVE coverage of WWE Extreme Rules 2016 in lovely Newark, New Jersey!

"Your Kennection to the Wrestling World" Ken Hill here providing up-to-date coverage of all the "Extreme" action WWE can provide...in the "totally New and certainly not-still-PG" era!

Kickoff match is up first...

No Disqualifications
Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin

RESULT: Baron Corbin wins via pinfall; Corbin pinned Ziggler following a low blow and the End of Days.

TIME: 7:36

THOUGHTS: I kinda liked the red herring at the start with the emphasis on the Andre memorial trophy, making us think it would be used here.

I can understand they didn't want to give too much away with the first "extreme" stipluation, but it would've better served WWE to whet the crowd's appetite with a little more ultra-violence than a simple (albeit "plum-crushing") low blow.

As for the match itself, Corbin won, as he should, cleans up matters with Ziggler, and can now move on, squash some more low-carders, and eventually find his way to a US or IC title picture in the next month or so.

Tornado Tag Match (No DQ, No Countouts)
The Usos vs. The Club

RESULT: The Club win via pinfall; Gallows pinned Jimmy Uso following the Magic Killer.

TIME: 8:28

THOUGHTS: Shorter than I was expecting, but a good choice for the opener. Aggressive and fast-paced, both teams looked very motivated, and the ending with Gallows, Jimmy, andthe ring bell was well played-out.

Like I said, could've used a couple more minutes, but it put Gallows-Anderson on the PPV map like the WK Krew talked about, and now their role in the Reigns-Styles match remains to be seen. Side with Styles? Turn and align with a newly-heel Reigns? Something else entirely? We shall see...

United States Championship
Kalisto (c) vs. Rusev w/Lana

RESULT: Rusev wins via submission; Rusev tapped out Kalisto via the Accolade.

TIME: 9:30

THOUGHTS: A textbook big man-little man match played out here, with a lot of the focus on Kalisto's ailing back. Rusev dominated here, as could be expected; while neither man really had any momentum going into match, Kalisto in general has not looked at all like an effective underdog champion, and it was the best time to pull the plug on his US title reign so he and Cara can jump back into the tag team scene.

By the by, that Accolade at the end was NASTY.

WWE Tag Team Championship
The New Day (c) w/Kofi Kingston vs. The Vaudevillains

RESULT: The New Day win via pinfall; Woods pinned Gotch following a Shining Wizard.

TIME: 8:30

THOUGHTS: Once again, another match that falls under the ten minute mark, which makes me wonder just how much time Reigns-Styles is going to get, or if we're going to get more "McMahon Family Drama" on a PPV, which could easily be saved for a Raw opening.

It was more or less a "best of" The New Day; hilarious promo, Xavier being Xavier, and Big E defying physics as only a high-flying 300-pounder can. I could've done without the dramatic kickout out of the Whirling Dervish, as the Vaudevillains are still relatively fresh on the scene and you don't want to diminish their finishing move a couple months in.

Intercontinental Championship
Fatal 4 Way
The Miz (c) w/Maryse vs. Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn

RESULT: The Miz wins via pinfall; The Miz pinned Cesaro following a Helluva Kick from Sami Zayn.

TIME: 18:19

THOUGHTS: Fantastic, just a fantastic match overall. WWE gave these four the time they need; the storyline animosity was played up very well among all four men, fantastic in-ring chemistry, great fluidity from one move to the next, it all came together so wonderfully. The surprise Helluva Kick from Sami to Owens really set the tone for the kind of impact this match was going to have.

Cesaro really shined here, kicking out of two finishers and arguably taking the most punishment here. The psychology between Owens and Zayn was ramped up another notch, as Owens cost Zayn a surefire win, not unlike how Zayn has been a thorn in Owens' side the last couple months. Their feud continues, and everyone's looking forward to the next installment.

Miz played the sneaky heel champion very effectively, picking his spots and capitalizing on the Owens-Zayn animosity to pin a fallen Cesaro. All in all, a great match and a potential MOTY candidate, like Cole said.

Asylum Match
(Pinfall/Submission Only; No Escape)
Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho

RESULT: Ambrose won via pinfall; Ambrose pinned Jericho following a Dirty Deeds DDT into thumbtacks.

TIME: 26:27

THOUGHTS: Whereas the Fatal Four Way got just the time it needed to come off as a fantastic match, this match could've stood to lose 5-6 minutes. It was a fun match with a real hardcore feel, but could've used a lot of trimming down.

Too much time was focused on getting the weapons down, Jericho's heat segment felt realllly dragged out (again, his age has started to show the last few months) and Ambrose really only got pops when the weapons came into play, as it felt like the two men were more or less stumbling around into one spot after the other. The thumbtacks at the end felt more like a shock value factor rather than a critical component of the match.

What takes away from this match, ultimately, was that unlike Ambrose's match with Lesnar at WM 32, the match was more oriented around the weapons than the personal grudge, and took far more time than necessary, whereas Lesnar-Ambrose ended just as it heated up. Neither match, at WM 32 or tonight, really had a proper middle ground.

Ambrose winning here was the right call; his proposed match, no sense in having him losing it, and hopefully it frees up Ambrose for the IC or even the WWE World title picture.

WWE Women's Championship
Submission match/Ric Flair Banned From Ringside
Charlotte (c) vs. Natalya

RESULT: Charlotte won via submission; Natalya tapped out to the Figure Eight.

TIME: 9:35

THOUGHTS: A smooth technical affair between the two women, a good way to bring down the audience from the last two big matches before the Styles-Reigns main event.

The chemistry between champion and challenger was a little better than the last two times, but Charlotte still needs to work more on selling a submission or a move like the Sharpshooter that's supposed to be considered debilitating.

Dana Brooke interfering works fine, as she can work with a veteran wrestler in Natalya and work a lot more on her finesse in the ring. Meanwhile Charlotte finally moves on to other opposition, particularly Sasha Banks, who's hopefully recovered from her supposed head injury that's kept her off television.

WK KING OF PPV STANDINGS:
Ken - 5/9 (LOCK)
Zack- 4/9
Julian - 7/9
Brian - 5/9
Greg - 5/9
Julie - 2/9

WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Extreme Rules match
Roman Reigns (c) vs. AJ Styles

RESULT: Reigns wins via pinfall; Reigns caught Styles with a mid-air Spear for the three count.

TIME: 23:13

THOUGHTS: Say what you will about the crowd reception, but that was one hell of a WWE main event. It had some sweet hardcore spots (Styles' bumps through the table and the LED apron were sick), big-time moves (Reigns' Razor's Edge into a sit-out powerbomb) and a fun (albeit expected) ringside scrum with the Usos and the Club.

AJ's mannerisms were really something else, going from controlled to desperate to just plain sick of Roman and his "Bloodline", which we saw in his absolute mauling of the three with steel chairs, and keeping with his promise to pull no punches, even concerning his Club brethren.

While the Usos' interference may do Reigns no favors in currying the crowd (Ironically enough, the crowd was warming up to Reigns before they hit the ring), it actually works out fine as Reigns himself made no bones about winning at any cost either, plus it keeps with his "I'm not a good guy, either" schtick.

Rollins' (not-so) surprise return post-match was met with the expected positive uproar from the New Jersey faithful, and it's REALLY going to be interesting to see how WWE approaches the dynamic with him and Reigns going into Money in the Bank in June...
